Parmigianino: The Metamorphoses: the
Restoration of Diana and Actaeon’s fresco serves as introduction
to the didactic tour
At
the end of the restoration of the little room frescoed by the
Parmigianino (opened to the public at the end of May 1998) we
wanted to create a didactic permanent tour (which prepares the
visit of the fresco) with texts and images on panels which are
useful to show the work of art of the Parmigianino. It helps the
tourist to know everything about the “Little Room”: about the
painter and his patrons, the conservative history, the restoration
and its techniques, and about the other works of art by the Parmigianino
in Parma.
There are three sections: the first is about the painter
and his patrons with the biography of Francesco Mazzola (called
the Parmigianino) and other frescoe by Correggio which are in
the S.Polo Chamber in Parma. Beside there are some biographical
information about G. Galeazzo Sanvitale and Paola Gonzaga with
their respective portraits (paintings and drawings).
The second section reproduces the fresco
of Diana and Actaeon’s fable and the reproduction of studies,
drawings and some significant interpretations which help to understand
this fresco.
The third section deals with the fresco’s conservative history
of Fontanellato which is concisely described together with some
works of art by Felice Boselli and Antonio Bresciani. The last
part is about the recent restoration with the description of the
techniques used.
The restoration of the frescoe was carried out by the “Opificio
delle Pietre Dure” in Florence, with the financial contribution
of the Istituto dei Beni Culturali” (Institute of Cultural Goods)
of the Region Emilia Romagna, the scientific collaboration of
the “Sopraintendenza per i Beni Artistici e Storici” (Superintend
for Artistic and Historic Goods) of Parma and Piacenza.
